Quick tactics for brown trout

Browns are ambush predators that own the dark water: undercut banks, log jams, deep seams, tailouts. The big ones feed at night or in low light and eat fish, crayfish, and mice more than insects. They're the wariest trout in the river — one sloppy cast and the pool is done.

Sculpins, minnows, crayfish, big nymphs, terrestrials — and each other. The biggest browns want a meal, not a snack.

• Streamers on a sink tip — sculpin and baitfish patterns, banks and structure
• Double-nymph rig through the deep seams (sow bugs and midges on tailwaters)
• Hopper-dropper along grassy banks in summer
• Jerkbaits and spinners for spin anglers, low light
