Fishing Jordanelle Reservoir: what to know

Jordanelle sits at 6,100 feet just above Heber and Park City, a 3,000-acre reservoir on the Provo with a state park on three arms: Hailstone (the big marina and ramp on the west), Rock Cliff (the quiet Provo inlet arm on the east, wade-and-kayak water), and Ross Creek. It has one of Utah's best smallmouth bass fisheries on its rocky shorelines, plus rainbows, browns, yellow perch, and a kokanee population that's becoming a real draw.

Ice-off in April puts rainbows in the shallows and starts the smallmouth pre-spawn; May and June are the bass peak, with fish on beds along the rocky points. Summer is trolling for rainbows and kokanee and casting for smallmouth at first light. Fall cools things back down — browns move toward the Provo inlet at Rock Cliff and the kokanee stage. It ices over by late December, and the winter perch and rainbow fishing through the ice is steady if not spectacular.

Smallmouth: tubes, drop-shot plastics, and crawfish crankbaits on every rock pile, 5–25 feet deep. Trout: troll pop gear and a worm or a small spoon 15–30 feet down in summer, or fish a jig or PowerBait from the Hailstone shore in spring and fall. Kokanee: dodgers and small hoochies on downriggers. Standard statewide limits apply; the park has a day-use fee.
